Joel Radio is proud to return to one of its most successful and audience-pleasing bits – having a girl on the show. And not just any girl, but the roller derby racing, joke tellin’, roller coaster ridin’, Lauren. While her exploits with the Detroit Derby Girls and adventures in the male-dominated world in comedy are interesting, Lauren brings a unique, “missed it by that much” story about not banging Zach Braff. Seems the former Scrubs star put on all the right moves, according to Joel and Corey anyway, but there would be no Garden State-esque romance for the two. Find out why it didn’t happen and why Lauren isn’t pursuing Ryan Gosling despite an opportunity, hear awful things that get shouted by guys at gas stations, and what it’s like to be on the receiving end of the worst, most offensive pick-up text message ever. Also, hear why Joel doesn’t think Corey should plan a visit to Cedar Point, Corey’s recent disappointment with a musical hero, and somebody thinks The Hangover 3 is the worst movie ever – that person is America. Paranormal investigator John E.L. Tenney has investigated many things that remain unknown. Like why Corey and Joel can’t keep on topic. This episode is exhibit A in the elusive and rarely recorded podcasters-babblling-on-about-nothing phenomenon – but it’s a fun one! John joins the guys to look into the mysteries of Marc Maron’s new IFC series, Maron, and what the possibilities would be for the series Fragomeni or the more likely hilarious Tenney, the adventures a middle-aged ghost hunter. The also break down Inside Amy Schumer and the awesome Ginger Baker documentary Beware of Mr. Baker. Most of the show’s vitriol, however is saved for Room 237, a glorified YouTube documentary about Stanley Kubrick’s film The Shining. Joel especially hates this conspiratorial bullshit, and despite recently speaking at the Stanley Hotel, John denies that his bullshit in no way overlaps with the bullshit in the film. Also, Joel loves obscure comedian Fred Stoller, high school reunions are for suckers, and John’s ex-girlfriends are coming to an art gallery near you.

On this show you’ll hear the comedy debut of show friend Rob Rose. While Joel believes no one’s first attempt at stand-up comedy is indicative of any future success or failure, it is safe to say that Rob’s debut is highly entertaining for all the wrong reasons. Listen as you’ll hear the several-month-old recording of Rob drunkenly stumbling through a set that includes a potentially offensive (yet hilarious) opening line, references to comedy “greats” from the past (Judy Tenuta!) and crowd work so inept it might be described as the comedian heckling the audience. Still, when you consider the nearly empty room, the inebriation of the performer, the lack of preparation and the assholery of Joel and Corey in the audience, it all adds up to an extremely entertaining good time. Besides, Rob is a good sport and he gets more serious comedy advice from Joel and Corey in the studio including lessons learned from the greats (like Dave Attell), like how to make your comedy sound natural, how to deal with success and failure and how to not look like an open miker on Facebook. It’s good solid comedy advice, after some well-deserved ball-busting on this show. Also, Corey reviews Iron Man 3 which leads into a summer movie preview including end of the world movies that look alike, a return for Superman, and why everyone claims to love The Lone Ranger, even though almost nobody seen it. Plus, reaction to the Boston bombing, podcasts the guys like, and why, after several months, it must be said that the Doritos tacos have failed – sorry Taco Bell.

Joel’s secret life as ICP’s Upchuck tha Clown has gotten more bizarre as the years have gone by. This time the weirdness is brought to you by Robin Williams, Community creator Dan Harmon and Bobcat Goldthwait. Not unlike the clip from show #103 , Bobcat did a podcast appearance, this time on Dan Harmon’s Harmontown. Bobcat recaps his Gathering of the Juggalos experience, the violence that befell Joel, all the while Robin does his best Upchuck impersonation and Dan speculates on Upchuck’s potential autobiography. It’s funny stuff like this that Joel and ICP themselves take as an honor. Corey doesn’t feel the same, however, thinking they’re mocking Joel and the debate that follows is most certainly the most heated talk two men have ever had about clowns, cans of soda and a guy named Bobcat. Also, Corey is back from his cross-country road trip, find out where the most boring place in America is, the state of motel cable TV and where strip clubs are banned and where they flourish. Plus, Joel and Corey’s movie and Blu-ray round-up, as G.I. Joe returns, The Replacements get documented, and Joel watches a movie just for his favorite hot actress. This sparks the guys’ ridiculous lists of movie crushes past, present and future. and those are some lists – some sad, pervy lists.

If you don’t take the title too literally, you’ll have a great time listening to this episode of Joel Radio. The title is a reference to co-host John Tenney’s evaluation of the show – mid-show! Firstly, regular co-host Corey checks in from his cross-country road trip, eating his way out to the West coast. Find out why he’s doing such a thing, why he’s taking forever to do it, and what old show favorite is along for the ride. Back in-studio, the guys’ guest is the fabulous Janet, a “relationship expert”, blogger, and all-around good time who shares her advice for singles as well as stories from her own dating life. Find out about Janet’s “thing for comedians”, how she almost banged Daniel Tosh, why hot tubs aren’t sexy and why guys shouldn’t sing karaoke. The karaoke theory though, is nearly instantaneously destroyed by John and Joel’s amazing rendition of a Prince classic, one that is sure melt the hearts and moisten the panties of anyone who hears it. Plus, Tenney’s pains are spreading, Joel murders a Woody Allen classic, Harry checks in from The Twilight Zone, and John’s parents are the best radio guests ever – just never have them back. Listen to this one late and drunk, ’cause that’s how it was made.

Hear Bobcat’s hilarious story about performing at The Gathering of the Juggalos, Joel’s corrections to his story, and while Joel never shared this true and funny story on the air before. Sleeping troubles anyway, as he recounts how his natural sleep aid made him act violently, why he preferred being on prescription meds for insomnia and why he’s not a fan of illicit drugs in this case. John shares his own battles with sleep disorders and how his girlfriends have used his semi-conscious state it to their advantage. Find out why Joel refuses to do a sleep study and get John’s recommendations for some good zzzzs, and not all of them seem like good ideas. It’s been a very long time since comedian Bill Bushart joined the show, but it was worth the wait as he joins Joel and Corey for a 100+ minutes of yuks. Topic #1 is a discussion of the current state of stand-up comedy, how it’s changed over the years, and the guys’ advice for new comics. Joel tells you how to bomb with grace (or Grace), Bill talks the art of teaching comedy, and Corey regrets never cashing in on an open mike windfall. Also, the guys also attempt to tell road sex stories, only to figure out all the good stories happened to someone else. But, however, you’ll find out who’s done what (and where) in their private lives, like who was in the nun’s bed, who got their parent’s approval for a girlfriend sleep over, and what awful things were going on at the bagel shop. Plus, why you should always take a girl to the strip club, a Facebook stalker gone public, and why Joel can’t wait for Bill to throw another party.

Joel Radio #100: The Best and Worst Movies of 2012

The review of 2012 is complete with Joel and Corey’s list of their most loved and loathed films of 2012. While it’s not completely harmonious, the guys largely agree on the best and the worst – Argo, Looper, The Queen of Versailles, The Dark Knight Rises, Jeff Who Lives at Home (not saying what category they fall in to) – there are a few spots of conflict. Prometheus is a hot spot with Joel admiring it as modern sci-fi monster movie and Corey thinking it’s a brain-dead retread. Joel, meanwhile, found Zero Dark Thirty a plodding version of the get Osama bin Laden story where Corey had it among his very best. They also each had a superhero flick in their top picks, but not the same one and Joel’s pick will surprise people. Plus, the worst list is always fun, featuring a comedy with “anti-humor”, non-actors acting, old people romancing, and indie movie ineptitude. And find out which director has the rare accomplishment of having two film mentioned, one each on Joel’s best-of and worst-of lists.

It should have been a wonderful return for 2013, but somehow Joel screwed up the recording of this podcast. It’s not all bad though, just a few minutes lost from near the end. But every dated reference and bad pun that was lost is sure to infuriate Corey Hall, whose tales of snack foods past must be heard in their entirety. Or guest Rob Rose, who shares his thoughts on TV and the assholes of 2012 that featured on the last two shows. Still, you’ll hear about more plans for Yellowknife, the movie Joel doesn’t like that movie as much as he’s supposed to, Joe Biden and Brent Musburger getting pervy, and the new low for celebrity reality TV. Plus, the Douchebag Hotline get its a new name, how Michael Strahan is almost impossibly worse than Regis Philbin, and let’s all go to Ghana (they’re paying). In what has become the Super Bowl of the Joel Radio podcast, Joel and Corey pick the the 2012 Assholes of the Year. The AOTY is not merely an award for doing something bad – it an award for excellence hypocrisy, deception, duplicity, meanness and a failing to do what is right. In some cases, these folks are respected and revered by the public, but Joel and Corey lift the veil of phoniness to let you see the real jerk-offs inside. There’s some real doozeys this year too, including shady CEOs, insidious political hacks, sinister celebrities and other people we can all agree really suck. Then there’s those you might think are alright, but they’re not! Some of the world’s biggest do-gooders are just as phony and wicked as the rest of the dickheads on this list, so be prepared to be outraged – or you just might agree! You’d think the garbage that is morning radio would have stayed there. But no, some genius came up with the idea for a TV show called Dish Nation. This involves some of America’s “funniest” morning show teams cracking wise on the celebrity news of the day. As you can imagine, it’s awful. And the worst of it is Scott Shannon and Todd Pettengill, from WPLJ in New York. If their lame shtick wasn’t bad enough, they look like Siegfried and Roy after a trip to the cosmetics counter. Listen as Joel and Corey playback a recent episode of Dish Nation and comment on Scott, Todd, the ridiculous black show from Atlanta, the breakdown of ages and predefined roles of the hosts, and everything else that makes it so awful. Plus, thoughts on the recent election as Corey gloats and Joel is waiting hours at the polls – another example of how the government isn’t working. Also, Corey loves a sausage, Chicago-style pizza should stay in Chicago, and Joel’s knowledge of TV anchor babes is put on public display.

Joel Radio #93: We Can Kirk It Out

This week’s guest has taken time out from Detroit’s open mike scene, rambling about the Detroit Tigers on Facebook, and making little-seen YouTube videos to join Joel and Corey on the show. Kirk is an original thinker with big plans in show business, and if he can survive 90 minutes here, he’ll probably do just fine in Hollywood. The guys discuss podcasting’s history and Joel and Corey’s place in it, why Corey is sick of horror movies and Kirk’s plans to move to L.A.. Also, the Hulk Hogan sex tape is driving Hulkamaniacs Corey and Kirk wild, but Joel, the show’s pro-wrestling insider, thinks the whole thing is a cheap stunt and offers up evidence why. Plus, Kevin James’s new movie makes no-one smile except Henry Winkler – who got paid for it.

Joel and Corey wish they were TV characters. No it’s not like they want they’re own show, it’s just that they want to live in a fabulous apartment with little or no income. That’s what happens on shows like FOX’s New Girl, which returned to TV screens this past week. The guys talk the new TV season, but there’s not much to like so far. Of the new shows, Corey isn’t buying the Mindy Kaling hype, while neither of them can figure out the appeal of Ben from Ben and Kate – even if Joel’s place looks like Ben would live there. Also, Eddie Murphy + Richard Pryor = violence, why The Little Rascals were the most racist thing ever, and Joel can’t take Halloween hysteria for another year. Plus, Corey goes to Europe and does it “wrong” – some unbelievable fan reaction to the last show!

Joel Radio #91: From Paris to Wrigley

It’s been a long time and a lot has happened to our intrepid podcasters since the last show. Corey got married and jetted over to Europe for the honeymoon, where he and his new bride indulged in sightseeing, museum touring and french fry eating. Joel, meanwhile, took his prize to see Bruce Springsteen in Chicago at Wrigley Field. Again, a fine trip, with the exception of the pouring rain during the show, the sea of humanity on the Red Line train and the ass-rape prices for everything including a near $100 trip to the aquarium. Hear about Corey making jam for the wedding guests, why he almost missed his flight, and why Amsterdam’s red-light district didn’t entertain the missus. While Joel’s GF enjoyed the concert, especially the special guests, but not Eddie Vedder as much as that “other guy” whom she never heard of. Plus, it’s a historic candy crossover at Costco, the real difference between Snickers and Milky Way (it’s not just peanuts!), and Corey’s pessimism about the new TV season is summed up in one new show.

The world went Olympic crazy over the past few weeks. Unfortunately it didn’t happen to two surly comics in Metro Detroit. As the world was captivated my synchronized swimming, water polo, and kayaking, Joel and Corey thought the whole thing was a silly, jingoistic, poorly-covered mess. And that Olympic Village isn’t an orgy! It just isn’t. A decent college party maybe, but nobody’s banging those female gymnasts – certainly not the male gymnasts! And what happened to good-looking American female beach volleyball players? Has Europe overthrown America’s dominance in cute bathing suit-clad asses? Listen and find out. Also, Joel returns from The Gathering of the Juggalos, and shares his tales of sharing the stage with Cheech and Chong, Ralphie May and Bobcat Goldthwait. And Corey worked with Hal Sparks!
