It’s a always a fun show when John Tenney stops by. With his recent Bigfoot hunting and conspiracy-exploiting lectures behind him, John joins the guys to announce a new project. It’s a retro cartoon show and the first episode is embedded below. Find out John’s hopes and dreams for the new project and reminisce with Corey about his previous brush with underground fame (it’s actually pretty funny). Joel’s not left behind in the fame sweepstakes though as his small, uncredited, but crucial spot in the Judd Apatow-produced The Five Year Engagement hits screens. Joel has the full story of his involvement with the film, his “extra” pool discovery by the director and tells why he hadn’t promoted it earlier on the show. Also, the value of entertainment is evaluated as Joel thinks Blue Man Group is over-priced, Corey hasn’t jumped at the under-priced Beach Boys reunion, and Joel spends big bucks for Springsteen in Chicago. Plus, Corey says The Dictator should be overthrown, Dark Shadows is worth a look, and Joel’s night with George Clinton and the P-Funk All Stars.

Joel Radio #83: The Avengers of Podcasting

This week, Corey Hall gives his review of The Avengers, a movie so long in the making that the twelve-year-olds who really wanted to see this movie are now in their mid-thirties. Still, Corey is enthusiastic, while Joel feels that the general public isn’t really feeling this film, but it’ll make $200 million on opening weekend and about three-hundred bucks after that. Speaking of juvenile movies, the guys see Aardman’s Pirate movie (it’s OK), and Joel thinks Disney’s Chimpanzee is a collision of state-of-the-art visuals and cliched animated film narration – a near miss at a classic. Also, Dick Clark finally dies, Levon Helm sadly dies, and Mike Wallce dies as he lived – an asshole. Plus, HBO’s Girls is not for guys, Corey suffers through Law & Order, and Joel finally sees Bruce Springsteen after a twenty-five year wait.

This show has little shape or structure – just like the hosts! Anyway, Joel and Corey discuss Mitt Romney’s chance for election, the awfulness that is Wrath of the Titans, and Chevy Chase or Keith Olbermann – who’s a bigger asshole? Also, Joel rekindles a romance with The Band after watching The Last Waltz, Corey loves Alison Brie but (maybe) not as much as Lisa Loeb, and nobody really seems to like Sarah Palin. Plus, why Lasse Hallstrom isn’t famous, Joel’s picks and pans on DVD, and Ryan Seacrest is the new Dick Clark and not Carson Daly, who has carved out an awful persona all his own.

With apologies for the last show (even though some of you enjoyed it), Joel and Corey Hall return. Speaking of crap, Corey gives an in-depth review/hatefuck to John Carter – a new film that proves that 100 years is too long for fans to wait for a film adaptation. Also, Joel dislikes some recent home video releases including one of Corey’s faves from 2011. It’s not all bad though, as the guys both love Jeff, Who Lives at Home, a film that cost less than one CGI Martian from John Carter, and is showing in about 1/10th of the theaters – thanks, Hollywood! Also, Joel deletes annoying Facebook friends while Corey doesn’t have the stones, our fans hate Harry Artin Berberian, and the slow death of stand-up comedy in Detroit. Plus, the prospects of The Hunger Games being a hit seem as high as Jennifer Lawrence’s tits.

Joel Radio #80: Off The Meds

Not unlike the recent Midwest tornadoes, Harry Artin aka MC Sampler recently blew through the Joel Radio studio leaving a wake of destruction in his path. Requiring promotion for his latest music video, Harry seeks the advice of Joel and Corey Hall. And while he gets lots of advice (and the video and song are actually pretty good!) it seems unlikely that Harry’s taking any of it. Harry details the making of the video, discusses his new musical partner Halfway House, insults people of every skin tone, and is seemingly possessed by 60′s TV end credits. It’s a wacky listen, but as wacky listens go, this one’s worth a shot. Plus, saying goodbye to the Monkees Davy Jones, a less fond goodbye from Corey to conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart, major celebrity nude leakage, and Billy Crystal returns to The Oscars to remind us that nothing is as good as we remembered it.

If going to the gym wasn’t hard enough wasn’t hard enough, the bad music played there, makes it doubly tough drop the pounds. That’s the premise laid out by Corey. That discussion – about having to listen to “Neutron Dance” while on a treadmill – starts a discussion about mass media, ironic metal fans, when Happy Days started to suck, and whether the Big Ragoo actually nailed Shirley. The guys break down the failure of popular culture and how a the rise of various sub-cultures have made ’90s angst irrelevant and a little embarrassing. Also, Eastbound and Down returns – Joel loves it but says a new HBO show misses, Ricky Gervais puppets a midget, a brief Oscar preview and why real Navy SEALs make real bad actors. Plus, a memo to SNL – real celebrity + impersonator = lazy, shitty comedy.

It’s the big Joel Radio post-Super Bowl extravaganza, which is made slightly less super by the game being not so great (until the finish), the commercials sucking, and Madonna making the terrorists hate us even more. Still, Joel and Corey have you covered for discussion of Bud Light Platinum, the joy of punting, M.I.A. is an asshole and why Godaddy can’t seemingly find a hot chick for the commercial. Find out if the guys endorse Met Life’s cartoon character sizing, discuss the bad example Doritos sets (for rednecks), and get the whole history of half-time shows from the truly awful to the pretty good to the pretty bad. Plus, Joel is on a “Who kick” so listen for what was The Who’s greatest performance ever, and while the both love The Beatles, how Corey was more of a Beach Boys guy. Also, Trump becomes Captain Obvious by endorsing Romney, The Rock’s movie career dissected, Joel’s embarrassing commercial opportunity, and Ray Stevens – coming to a jerkwater berg near you.

Joel Radio #77: The Best and Worst Movies of 2011

Joel and Corey have completed their 2011 re-cap shows with a list of the best (or more accurately, their favorite) films of 2011. While Joel admits his list isn’t comprehensive, he manages to throw in a few oddball documentaries from cable, while Corey’s likes are in tune with the critical mass for the most part. There’s a few exceptions that won’t get spoiled here, like a British comedian’s vanity project that Corey loved and Joel’s affection for CGI primates that isn’t shared by his co-host. Still, there’s a lot they agreed on, both foreign, domestic, documentary and occasionally weird, so this is turns out to be a pleasant Netflix queue-filling discussion from a couple of film-loving nerds. Of course, there’s hate, too, as Corey still wants Adam Sandler dead, and Joel thinks someone should’ve stopped Conan O’Brien. There’s also no love for Smurfs, Chipmunks, Idiot Brothers or Russell Brand And only one host picked a comic book movie as one of his faves. Wanna guess? Wrong.

Joel Radio #76: The Best and Worst of TV 2011

It’s now 2012, but Joel and Corey have no problem living in the past. Hence, a re-cap of the best and worst programming that illuminated the boob tube in 2011. The lists are really dissimilar too, as the guys only agreed that one comedy show was worthy of both of their Top 10s. Joel’s list is more premium-cable heavy, while Corey leans towards more eclectic basic cable fare, including a show that was recently resurrected after being cancelled more than a decade ago. The worst shows include lots of housewives, cooking, news pundits, hoggers, loggers, and, more than anything else, two obnoxious women who are financially challenged. Plus, Corey preps for his off off Broadway debut in the one-man show, The Vic Tayback Experience.

Joel Radio #73: Good Riddance Regis

The guys do a live commentary of the final Live! With Regis and Kelly starring Regis Philbin. Listen as Joel and Corey try to find highlights in a show highlighting a near 30-year run on the same program. What does it say when a 1-hour highlight show feels padded? That Regis’ career was that of an affable, do-nothing hump who made a fortune off telling Midwest housewives where he went to dinner? Something like that. The guys break down the final show, Regis’ seeming lack of emotion, the bizarre celebrity audience members and the near-complete snubbing of Kathie Lee Gifford. The guys make a decent-tasting turkey sandwich out of a foul-tasting turkey of a TV send-off. A perfect post-Thanksgiving treat. I guess we now have to hear where Nick Lachey went to dinner for the next 30 years…..

Joel Radio #72: Gettin’ Clothes and Stuff

Detroit is a wonderful place to live – if you’re in the city’s government. More than a couple of our former leaders are in jail, some awaiting trial, etc. It’s a dirtier city than the Atlantic City in Boardwalk Empire. Everyone’s on the take and the residents are poor and suffering. Thank the imaginary deity then, that we have Charlie LeDuff, a bizarre, homeless-looking, straight talking reporter with the on-air skills of a freshman broadcasting student. Still, Joel and Corey love Charlie LeDuff, and this weeks report is a doozy – you’ll hear it on the show, but it’s embedded here, too. It’s example 1A of a non-traditional broadcaster going beyond boundaries of what’s accepted and the media better off for it (speaking of that, can we get Joel and Corey on the radio?). Anyway, it’s a busy week, as Penn State’s boy-touching scandal explodes the campus, Adam Sandler releases Jack and Jill – the worst movie ever (according to Corey), and Joel suffers an insufferably stupid injury. Plus, wrestlers vs comedians – who’s the bigger scumbags?, the Chinese love KFC and the history of Joel’s neighbors – the worst ever.

You think there’s be some cheap joke for show #69, but there isn’t. In fact, there’s some serious business to take care of on this show, namely previewing the new fall TV season. In fact, they’ve created a game out of it, and you can play along. Like comedian, Matt McClowry, who joins the show to add his insights, handicap the favorites and stare blankly into space. Actually, Matt’s a hilarious comic and there’s of material in this year’s crop of new shows, like time-traveling plus dinosaurs on Terra Nova, the dumbest reality concept ever in H8R, and the horror of NBC’s shove-it-down-your-throat new sitcom, Whitney. The guys make their predictions on which is the first show to get the axe, which ones return for 2012, and one that Joel thinks will still be in on 2045. Plus, a summer super hero movie summary, of which Matt only saw one!

Joel Radio #68: Two and a Half Juggalos

After being returning from the Gathering of the Juggalos and being sick for a week, Joel Radio returns, largely bolstered by stories of Joel meeting people who became famous twenty to forty years ago. Including Charlie Sheen, who Joel met, attempted to write jokes for, and ultimately failed to help get over to a hostile crowd. Things went better with the legendary MC Hammer, as he and Joel’s mutual admiration ended with pictures and Twitter shoutouts! Corey can’t believe all he’s hearing, including that Vanilla Ice is a nice guy, That Jimmy “J.J.” Walker was funny, or that the Kottonmouth Kings rap about marijuana (OK, he actually believes the last one). Also from the Gathering, Joel makes the press, Ron Jeremy bears gifts, Brian Posehn falls off the wagon and the Iron Sheik lost his mojo. Plus, Corey hates the summer movies, Cedar Point is a time suck, and Joel feeds a buffalo – but not at The Gathering.

Joel Radio #67: As Seen on CompuServe

Joel and Corey go back-to-back weeks for the first time in quite a while. And for no good reason either, as the guys sample the latest movie reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. While Corey is listed over there, what’s more interesting is the critics that don’t get with the critical mass, and the one guy who publishes his reviews on CompuServe. That’s right, CompuServe. If you can’t remember 1995, then fire up the Compuserve homepage, and take a trip back to the Clinton administration. Also, Joel is up sick and rediscovers the genius of D.C. Cab, and its star Charlie Barnett. That’s another time traveling trip – right back to 1983! Gary Busey! Bill Maher! Mr. T! Paul Rodriguez! Marsha Warfield! Irene Cara! Whitman Mayo! Awesome! Plus, The Change-Up makes a tired premise more tired, Rise of the Planet of the Apes sinks, Cowboys and Aliens coasts, and Joel will take Christina Applegate’s leftovers.

Joel Radio #66: Fishing With Jake

Joel Radio returns with power. Really. Power, meaning the utility company actually managed to keep the lights on long enough to finish the podcast. This follows a long, hot, sticky week in Detroit, where the power went out, a comedy show was ruined and the people were miserable – sounds like every week! Actually not, as Joel saw Paul McCartney perform live this week and gives a full, enthusiastic review. Corey, meanwhile, is stuck at home watching reality TV. Especially his favorite show, Storage Wars. But for God’s sake, don’t watch the sad, 2nd-tier knock-offs. Also, the guys join Google +, Jake Gyllenhaal goes to the wild, Hillbilly Handfishin’, and Katy Perry’s ass comes out for the Smurfs. Plus, Falling Skies soars, 30 Minutes or Less is the summer’s best comedy, and new a website is imminent.

Joel and Corey are joined on this show by Eric Thomas, a comedian, radio talent and podcaster. Eric claims he can talk about anything – and he does! This is a really fun show. The guys memorialize the end Club Bart’s Comedy Night and look forward to Joel’s new show (info here!). There’s also much irreverence about the Casey Anthony not guilty verdict, including Florida’s future stripper prospects and Joel’s explanation of why “reasonable doubt” isn’t what people think it is. Also, the top movies of 2011 so far, Joel revamps the blog, Corey cries for old media, and Corey and Joel play old school hip-hop experts – about as well as you think they would.
